Offering the best of both in a DUAL OPTION

An H.S.A. compatible medical insurance plan can be offered, in most cases, as a dual option with a traditional plan for those situations where an H.S.A. may not be the “best fit” for an individual. There are some situations in which an individual or family can limit their out-of-pocket expenses more effectively with a traditional medical insurance plan than with a High Deductible Health Plan/H.S.A. combination. For instance, an employee who becomes eligible to enroll in his employer’s group medical plan late in the calendar year may have fewer total out-of-pocket expenses by selecting a traditional plan with copays and co-insurance. This is because the employee has a limited number of months to save on his premium costs and to make tax-free contributions to an H.S.A. account toward his high deductible and out-of-pocket limits.

By offering both a traditional medical plan and a High Deductible Health Plan/H.S.A. combination, employees are permitted to select the plan that best meets their needs. At the same time, the employer can benefit from the premium savings and tax savings available through pre-tax H.S.A. contributions
